Madrona School At a Glance

We have enjoyed watching our child blossom this past year in this well rounded curriculum. We have appreciated the openness and support of our child’s teacher. We appreciate the heart and soul of Madrona [School]... —parent of a 4th grader

Founded in 1999 by a group of committed parents and teachers, Madrona School will be celebrating its 25th school year in the Fall of 2024. The school now serves 72 children in Parent-Child, Preschool, Kindergarten and 1st through 5th grades. Set amongst towering trees, tucked away in the heart of Winslow on Bainbridge Island, our school integrates a classical education with movement, the arts, and the wonder of nature, to meet each student's developmental needs. We are an independent and non-profit school, and are an associate member school of the Association of Waldorf Schools in North America (AWSNA).

Facts at a glance:
We serve between 60 - 80 children each year in parent-child, preschool, kindergarten, and 1st through 5th grades.

Our students enjoy small class sizes; early childhood programs run at a teacher-to-student ratio of 6 or 7 to 1; grade school classes are capped at 18 students.

Families choosing Madrona School live throughout Kitsap County, including Bainbridge Island, Bremerton, Hansville, Indianola, Poulsbo and Silverdale.

About one-fourth of families receive financial aid.

Our school campus is housed in the Eagle Harbor Congregational Church at the corner of Winslow Way and Madison Avenue, at 105 Winslow Way West.

Our Mission, as approved by our board of directors: To promote the healthy and balanced development of children, while serving as a model of educational change. We strive to cultivate confident, compassionate and joyful human beings who are the captains in the adventure of their own lives.

Educational Values: Madrona School is committed to providing a balanced education that nurtures the whole person, body, mind and spirit. We strive to meet each student earnestly, mindfully and without judgment, recognizing that each child is a spiritual being. We seek to understand each child and support his soul development. Guided by the indications of Rudolf Steiner, the Waldorf curriculum strives to meet each child at every step of development, embracing childhood and nurturing the child’s innate love of learning. Within this safe and healthy environment, self-discovery and imagination can flourish. We provide a rigorous, classical liberal arts education that teaches the whole child by integrating art, music and movement into every lesson and inspires students to develop to their full potential. This curriculum offers a deep and meaningful alternative to our fast-paced modern society where “more” and “sooner” are thought to be better. We seek to imbue all activities with beauty, kindness, truth and compassion providing a foundation for lifelong learning.
