About Waldorf Education

“The ability to recognize true rigor is one of the most important achievements in any education, but it is worthless, even dangerous, if it is not placed in the service of some larger vision that also renders it humane.”  — William Cronon

Waldorf Education

To learn more about Waldorf education and the philosophy behind it, see Why Waldorf Works, or AWSNA’s list of Frequently Asked Questions. Other resources include Waldorf Answers and Waldorf Library.

The Waldorf curriculum includes art, music and handcrafts as integral pieces of the education that contribute significantly to the children’s mastery of reading, writing and arithmetic.

Beginning in preschool and kindergarten, the children’s imagination, sense of wonder and reverence for all living things is encouraged.  This creates an eagerness for the academics that follow in the grades.

Once in elementary school, the children’s academic studies are enlivened and balanced with artistic and social activities.  This engages the students’ need for doing, thinking and feeling.  Learning happens in a non-competitive environment where uniqueness is celebrated.  Teachers cultivate meaningful relationships with students and their families, and foster respect and responsibility amongst their students.
